47 Down, 5 to Go
In my year of reading dangerously I’ve recently finished off books 46 and 47. With four weeks to go I’m right on schedule to accomplish my reading goal for 2017. It’s been a fun and rewarding challenge but it hasn’t been easy. I’m a “read every word” kind of guy so there hasn’t been any skimming as I’ve worked through all these books. In fact, I’ll go back and reread passages if I’ve missed something and will also have a pen at the ready to underline anything that stands out to me. Reading every word of 47 books over the course of 11 months takes some time but it’s been extremely worthwhile.
I’ve also complicated things by becoming a huge fan of podcasts. I listen to multiple podcasts throughout the day and in my car which means no more time for Audible. I haven’t finished an audio book in probably six months so I’ve been turning a lot more pages than earlier in the year.
On a side note, I’ve kicked off a book club for guys. We are small in number but are getting together each month to talk about books and life. The first book we read was The Secret Game by Scott Ellsowrth. It chronicled the story of African American basketball coach John McClendon and the “secret game” the North Carolina College for Negroes (now NC Central) team played against the Duke Medical School team in 1943. We were lucky to have the author Skype in with our club and share his personal insights with us. It was a great way to get the new club rolling.
I’ll be traveling a lot over the rest of the 2017 including a trip to Spain but I feel certain that I’ll be able to knock out the final five books to reach my goal. Here’s what I’ve finished since I last posted.
